Semantic development in Libyan words: A brief analytical study

Language is a social phenomenon, subject to the laws of change and evolution, like other social and cultural phenomena. One of the most prominent manifestations of this change is the semantic evolution that affects the meanings of words over time. The Libyan dialect is no exception. It is a dialect rich in diversity and influenced by linguistic, historical, and geographical factors, which have made its vocabulary a subject of study and analysis.
The Libyan dialect, with its linguistic accumulations, is influenced by Standard Arabic and several other languages, such as Berber, Turkish, and Italian. Therefore, it represents a living example of the changes that occur in vocabulary as a result of social and cultural interaction.
This study aims to analyze the manifestations of semantic evolution in a group of Libyan words. This is done by tracing the meanings of these words in selected Arabic dictionaries, comparing them to their current meanings, and examining the relationship of this meaning to the old meaning and the semantic aspect under which they fall.
