Terms of Weight and Measure in the Holy Quran: A Grammatical and Semantic Study in the Context of Financial Transactions (Selected Examples(

Abstract

This research aims to study the terms for weight and measure as they appear in the Holy Quran, revealing their linguistic and Quranic meanings and their relationship to financial transactions. This is achieved through a descriptive-analytical approach based on an inductive study of verses containing these terms and their analysis within their various contexts. The research addresses the concepts of weight and measure in both linguistic and technical senses, identifying the most prominent terms associated with them in the Holy Quran, such as: al-kayl (the measure), al-mizan (the balance), al-qist (the justice), al-qintar (the qintar), al-mithqal (the weight), al-naqir (the speck), and al-qitmir (the thin membrane), while clarifying their grammatical and contextual meanings.

The research concluded that the terms weight and measure form an integrated semantic system that contributes to building the Qur'anic conception of financial justice, and that studying these terms reveals the close relationship between Qur'anic language, legislative rulings, and economic objectives, which confirms the importance of employing semantic studies in understanding the Qur'anic text and deducing its legislative and civilizational dimensions.
